How Suffering Can Transform the Heart

|

One life experience we don’t choose, but somehow finds us is suffering. Where is God in suffering and how can we be transformed by it?

(new sermons published every Monday)

There are certainly common experiences that we are all guaranteed to walk through in life. One we do not choose, but somehow finds all of us is suffering. If life is consistent about one thing, it’s delivering hard circumstances for us to walk through. The prevailing question, especially as disciples of Jesus, is, “Where is God in suffering?” In addition, a series of questions often arises as we face adversity: Why does God allow this? Why am I going through it? What am I supposed to do with suffering? Is this part of God’s plan for me? There are thousands of others, but no matter the question, when we think of suffering, humanity, and God’s involvement, we are drawn to the book of Job. For the next few weeks, we will look at how God orchestrates every detail of our lives for our good as we read through the book of Job together. Through suffering, we are being prepared for transformation—if our minds become renewed.

Discussion Questions

  • Read Romans 12:1-2 and discuss how the renewing of your mind begins the transformation process.
  • As you look at the Story-Arc of Job’s life, how do you see that suffering has prepared you to renew your mind and encounter God?
  • Did the suffering you have been through bring humility or just hurt?
  • During suffering, how have you noticed your mentality change, your perspective shift, or your view of God align with the Word?
  • Where was God through the suffering you have experienced?
  • From the above questions, do you see your soul (mind, will, emotions, heart) transformed (more like Jesus)? In what ways?
