Discrepancy Between the Reality of GOD and Our Low Experience of Him

|

We often esteem self too high and God too low. Job 32-37 helps us find humility in His majesty. Are you ready to enter this mystery?

(new sermons published every Monday)

There is a great disparity between the reality God offers us through the Bible and our limited experience of it. He tends to offer life, peace, joy, and a beauty that is unparalleled, or otherworldly. Yet we continue in the slums of this routine we call life, and don’t experience the fullness of what God is inviting us into. Why is that? In Job, chapters 32-37, we see a glimpse of our answer; we have too high a view of self and too low a view of God. Renewing our minds comes from humility. Seeing the Character of God humbles our hearts. This is the great adventure we will take through these six chapters of God’s majesty. Are you ready to enter the mystery and leave with more questions than answers?

Discussion Questions

  • For six chapters, Job just listened. How are you paying attention to God throughout your day?
  • Job 32-37 offers you to “Instead of trying to understand what He is doing, we are called to understand who He is.” How can you do that?
  • How does self-righteousness show up in your life? Discuss independence instead of dependence on God. (Job 32:1)
  • Where does your understanding come from? God or life’s experiences? (Job 32:7-9)
  • How can you enter the mystery instead of insisting on answers? Does this change the way you read the Bible?
  • What are some practices that would help you experience God’s awe and wonder?

Questions for Reflection

  • What kind of holiness causes angels to veil themselves?
  • What kind of God crafts cosmos yet breathes into dust, making life?
  • How can the One who fills eternity also dwell with the humble and contrite?
  • Why does God often reveal Himself through whispers instead of the robust?
  • Have you reduced God to what can be explained?
  • What if mystery is not the absence of God, but the edge of His greatness?
  • Why do children often perceive wonder more easily than the learned?
  • Will eternity be endless time or an endless discovery of God’s vast character?
