Changing the Orphan Story

October 18 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Join us as we celebrate the transformative power of fostering and adoption to change a child’s story and discover ways that you can help rewrite the stories of kids at home and abroad.

Did you know that in 2022, there were more than 100,000 children in foster care waiting for adoption? Did you know that there are more than 400,000 churches in the United States? If one family from every church decided to adopt, it would change the lives of thousands of children—overnight.

During this special evening, you’ll be inspired by the movie Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot, which recounts how 22 families from a church in Texas banded together to adopt 77 children—the undesirables, the outcasts, the ones the system gave up on. Following the movie, you’ll have the opportunity to meet with liaisons and advocates from social services, private adoption agencies, and non-profits to learn how you can get involved.

Through this evening, we hope to equip you with information and resources to help change lives. There is a way for everyone to be part of this incredible demonstration of love and compassion—regardless of time, background, and finances. You have a part to play in rewriting the orphan story, and we want to help you discover it.

“Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.” —James 1:27 (ESV)

Frequently Asked Questions

How many children are waiting to be adopted?

Based on the most recent data from 2022, there are more than 100,000 children in foster care waiting to be adopted in the United States. There are millions of orphans worldwide.

Do I have to foster/adopt to change a child’s story?

No—not everyone is called to foster or adopt. But everyone can do something to help change a child’s story.  At this event, you’ll have access to lots of resources and opportunities for you to discover how you can partner with children in need.

Do I need a ticket to attend the event?

Yes, a ticket is required for entry to the movie. You can purchase tickets here.

Are human trafficking and foster care related?

Yes. A recent study from the National Foster Youth Institute estimated that 60% of child sex trafficking victims have been in foster care (or another part of the larger child welfare system). Helping to provide safe, stable living environments for children works to change the greater issue of human trafficking.

What are the statistics for adoption of special needs children?

It is common practice worldwide for a parent to abandon their child when they learn of a disability like Down Syndrome. According to a study in Paris, France by the National Library of Medicine, 27.6% of children with Down Syndrome were abandoned. In many countries, there is no plan for these children after being placed in an orphanage and aging out. Many end up in mental institutions. Special needs children around the world need help. Visit RODS Heroes for more information.

I have a heart for Down Syndrome. How do I adopt a child with Down Syndrome domestically?

For more information, visit the National Down Syndrome Adoption Network.

I can’t afford adoption!

You don’t have to and you shouldn’t! First, if the Lord places this call on your heart, He will provide. Find an adoptive parent at our event and chat with them. They will all resoundingly share that the Lord provides in miraculous ways for adoptions. Second, nonprofits like Brittany’s Hope offer grants for adoptive parents to help them change a child’s life.

Can I be a foster parent in my 60’s?

Yes! Representatives from Moore County Social Services Department will be available after the movie to answer all foster care inquiries.

Can I adopt a child from foster care?

Yes! Not all children are adoptable from foster care but this is a conversation you would have with your social worker in working through the process.
