Contend for the Faith

| |

Life brings joy and grief. When struggling, Jude says: contend for the faith, remember God’s works, hate sin, and find strength in prayerful worship.

The Church is filled with so many different people. All of us are at different points in our faith and seasons of life; we are walking through different things and facing different challenges. However, the Word calls us to consider putting the interests of others above our own. When others are rejoicing, we are instructed to rejoice with them. If they are suffering, be with them in their suffering. For when one suffers, we all suffer, and when one member rejoices, we should join in. At any point, there are two groups in our family: those who rejoice and those who weep. Jude offers us some direction on what to do if we are struggling, to contend for the faith against the lies that subtly creep in, to remember who God is and what He has done, to hate sin, and to strengthen ourselves in the LORD through worship and prayer.

Discussion Questions

  • Discuss some of the testimonies that God is doing in the church as a whole, or your group personally. (Revelation 12:11)
  • Why is it important to rejoice with those who are celebrating, especially if you are not in that same season? What happens to your heart when you do?
  • Jude 1:1 starts with a posture, not a title. How can you see life through the lens of humility and not entitlement?
  • What does it look like for you to ‘contend for the faith’?
  • Discuss some of the history of who God has been and what He has done in your life with your group. (Jude 1:5)
  • How do you strengthen yourself in what is already available (promises, blessings, Truth, Presence) through prayer, worship, and faith? (Jude 1:20)
  •  How can you begin to hate the sin that God hates?
