The Supremacy of Christ

|

When we truely encounter a dangerous, profoundly holy God, we are undone. Jesus made a way for us to boldly enter into God’s presence!

Sermon Summary

This week we continue our close look at the character and nature of God. The prophet Isaiah had a life-changing, dangerous encounter–behind the veil of the temple–with the profoundly holy God of angelic warriors. In this encounter he came undone, believing himself to be doomed simply by being a sinful man in the presence of the King. Then, at an atoning touch, he was radically transformed and joined the mission of God. As we explore the implications of this encounter, we see that a Great High Priest came much later who–in the most extraordinary way–ripped apart the veil, forever changing the way we encounter the very same King. How will you respond?

Discussion Questions

  • What was your biggest takeaway from the message?
  • Have you ever had an encounter with God that deeply affected you? Would you be willing to describe it to your group?
  • What are your thoughts on the holiness of God?
  • Take turns reading the following: Isaiah 6:5; Isaiah 31:4; Jeremiah 25:30; Hosea 11:10; Joel 3:16; Amos 1:2; and the quote from Michael Horton. Have you ever thought of God as dangerous? Should you?
  • Read Isaiah 6:6-8. What happened here? Describe the mechanisms that made Isaiah’s transformation possible (think: substitutionary sacrifice).
  • Read Mark 15:37-38; Hebrews 9:11-12; Hebrews 10:19-22; and Revelation 21:3-4. Discuss what Jesus accomplished on the cross and its implications for us now and for eternity.
  • What will you do differently, or how will you be different, as a result of these things?

“Nobody today seems to think that God is dangerous. And that is itself a dangerous oversight.”

-Michael Horton
