Sermon Summary

There was once a gospel that shook the world around it to its core, turning over societies, bringing a revolt, and inverting the culture. This gospel that was first introduced upon the arrival of Jesus was a seriously offensive gospel, compelling many to forsake their entire life to obtain the one great prize—Jesus. We need to come back to the power and love of this message again, returning not just to its simplicity and genuine call but to the center of the Good News, God Himself. This gospel once pushed so hard on its current society it actively opposed anyone who held its message, to the point of riots, imprisonment, and even death. Paul said that he is not ashamed of that gospel, for it has the power of salvation. We need to return to the God of the gospel by identifying any false gospels in our life and evict them making room only for the one true gospel of Jesus.

Discussion Questions

  • Two major false gospels are circulating in our culture today, and if we’re not careful, subtle versions of them can take root in our own hearts.
  • The first false gospel is the “good works gospel.” Do you ever feel like you should do more for God? Do you ever doubt that God loves you, that you are His child? Or the self-righteous part of you criticizes others for not doing what you do?
  • Gospel-lite is a supplemental faith; it’s adding Jesus to your life’s priorities. How have you made God in your image or only called on Him when needed instead of abiding in a relationship?
  • What is the true gospel, and how is it currently transforming you; or how has it transformed you in the past? (John 17:3)
  • Read through the scriptures about friendship in the world. To what degree have these slipped into your life? (James 4:4, 1 John 2:15)
  • Read and discuss Philippians 3:3-10. How have you resisted the works-based gospel like Paul and forsaken it? How are you experiencing “everything as loss” compared to the worth of knowing Jesus?
  • Spend some time praying for your group, and intercede for others that the true gospel of Jesus would invade their hearts and cities!
