As we enter this series asking the question, “Who is Jesus?”, the most important question of all is, “Who Is Jesus to You?”

Sermon Summary

As we continue pressing into City Renewal, we are beginning a summer series that explores the question, “Who Is Jesus?” This week we will examine an excerpt from Mark 8, where we see that the people in Jesus’ city had similar reactions to Him as the people in our city today. And we’ll address the most important question of all, “Who is Jesus to you?” How we answer this question has deep implications for us, for our city, and for our eternity. Who is Jesus to you? And how will you respond to Him?

Scripture References from the Sermon

Mark 8:27-34   |   Matthew 16:13-16   |   Luke 9:18-20   |   John 1:1-5, 14   |   Hebrews 1:2-3   |   Colossians 1:15-23   |   Ephesians 2:4-9

Discussion Questions

  • Read Mark 8:27-29. This is a great time, if you haven’t done this as a group, for you to take turns sharing your testimony, answering the question, “Who do you say Jesus is?”
  • What kinds of questions do people in your city have about Jesus? Where are they finding answers?
  • Pastor Dan listed 4 backgrounds that people might have as it relates to their understanding of Jesus (no religion, different religion, hurt by the church, and inoculated). Do you know what the people in your city think about Him? What was your background?
  • Discuss the different things that were anointed in the Old Testament: objects, prophets, priests, and kings. In what ways does Jesus fulfill these roles? And how is His fulfilling of these roles personally manifested in your life? In your city’s life?
  • Read Mark 8:34. What do you think Jesus meant by these directives? Was Pastor Dan right when he said that if your answer to “Who is Jesus?” doesn’t include Mark 8:34, your answer is incomplete? Why or why not?
