Prayer walking is simply walking as you pray. It is usually done while intentionally interceding for a particular people group, small geographical location, or specific situations. It is a kind of “portable intercession,” and is a great way of following Paul’s instruction in 1 Thessalonians 5 to “pray continually.” Below are examples of prayer walking:

  1. Walking through a college campus to pray over the students and campus.
  2. Walking through a park to pray over the people and city.
  3. Walking through your home to pray over it and inviting God’s presence.

Why Prayer Walk?

As followers of Jesus, we are called to bring the Kingdom of God wherever we are, and prayer walking is a great way to do that! Jeremiah 27:9 teaches us to “seek the peace and prosperity of the city… Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” (NIV) We can see and experience restoration in the places God calls us to simply by praying over it. Praying invites God’s presence, which can change the spiritual atmosphere of where we are.

How to Prayer Walk

Prayer walking is an intentional act of intercession during which you allow God to pilot your prayer experience while you are present at a specific place.

Prayer walking is meant to be very simple. Focus your mind on God as well as the people and place you are praying over. Listen to God as you walk, and let the Holy Spirit guide your prayers and where you are walking. Pray in the Spirit as well!
